While winters in Virginia are generally mild compared to some other areas of the US, it is equally as important to prepare for the changing seasons and know the hazards of some common winter items. Whether you’re up in the mountains with snow and ice, or in the city with a chill in the air, being prepared can be key.
Antifreeze and deicer chemicals can be dangerous. When choosing a product for icy walkways and driveways, be sure to pay attention to whether they are pet-safe or not. Some chemicals in these can cause paw irritation/burns and if ingested can cause internal harm as well. Antifreeze is a chemical used in vehicle engines that often gets maintenance in the winter and is a deadly toxin to all animals. Pay close attention to possible leaks, spills, or when performing maintenance on vehicles. Be sure to check garage floors, driveways, and refill supplies to avoid accidents. Its sweet smell makes it appetizing to many animals, but the consequences of having a taste are life-threatening.
Colder weather also means outdoor animals are often looking for a place to stay warm through the night or on windy days. Warm car engines often provide this type of hidden warm space for outdoor cats, strays, and wildlife. Be sure to check tire wells, under the car, and give a few loud knocks to startle away anything hiding inside before starting the engine. If you have outdoor pets or strays in the area, please help them in colder months by providing safe hideaway spaces that are protected from the elements and helping to keep them away from cars. There are many easy and inexpensive ways to create outdoor cat shelters using large styrofoam coolers, plastic totes modified into houses, and more. Providing adequate insulation to trap body heat for warmth, ensuring proper size, and choosing proper bedding that won’t trap moisture and freeze are all important properties.
The winter months also bring many holidays, and with those holidays come gatherings, food, and presents. Not all pets enjoy the company, so preparing for them to have a safe, quiet space to get away from the commotion is important. Some pets even need a prescription from the vet to help with their anxieties. Be sure to avoid ingestion of common holiday foods, decorations, and plants as well. Helping guests remember not to share their food with your furry family member can be a lifesaver. A few examples of toxic holiday items are:
- Poinsettias
- Chocolate
- Bread/baking doughs
- Alcohol
- Christmas tinsel/ribbon
